Moving Hosts, Moving House…

Moving hosts, moving house, hospital stays, and germs. All fun. Not.
I hate cycling, but I really like this photo.

The last few weeks have just about finished me off.

I was already stressed because moving web hosts is my absolute least favourite thing about owning websites, but then to add serious stress to things, Mum went into hospital two weeks before she moved house.

There really couldn’t have been worse timing.

I don’t want to go into details of what’s wrong with her, but let’s just say it’s female problems and may involve surgery.

Her being in hospital has meant that I’ve travelled to visit her and nan several times over the last few weeks. They live about an hour’s drive away, and when it’s hot outside, it’s really not a fun drive.

The last few days I’ve also not been feeling too great myself, so this hasn’t helped much either.

Moving hosts

As my hosting package with JustHost finishes in a few days, I’ve still had to sort out moving The Writer’s Cookbook over to Krystal during all of this.

And of course, it didn’t work the first time I did it -.-

The first time, for whatever reason, I didn’t receive an email to verify the transfer, so it failed.

Thankfully it worked the second time, so I could get the wheels in motion.

I set up a dummy site so that I could test everything before I moved everything over, and aside from a few issues with the .htaccess file, everything went swell.

So I thought it would be the same when I moved the live site across too.

But no.

I moved the live site across, then created a test post on the old site so that I had a way of knowing if things had worked.

And they did.

But not for me.

A cached version of our site is stored on our router, meaning that I still see the old site while everyone else sees it on the new host.

I could restart the router to get this to update faster, but if I do, I have to spend another two hours arguing with the SkyQ box.

I really don’t want to go through that again.

So instead, I had to check everything worked on my phone.

The WordPress Dashboard on mobile is horrible, but I managed to check everything and post something about the move.

I thought it was going great…until I went to view my new post.

That’s when it came up with an error.

The error was something to do with either one of the plugins, or the .htaccess file.

This was pretty weird, given that the dummy site was practically identical to the new one.

The only difference was that I’d downloaded a more recent version of the database, just to ensure everything was up-to-date.

I didn’t think there were any changes.

I was so very, very wrong.

Even now, after having fixed the problem, I still have no idea what it was.

All I can tell you is that I deactivated a couple of plugins and played with a little bit of code in the database, and BOOM. It works.

I’m not complaining.

Until something else breaks.

In which case I might start complaining again.

Just to warn you.

On a happier note…

Mum and Nan successfully moved into their new place today!

It’s a little bit closer, so that should make the drive a bit less tedious.

We still have to drive down the part of the M1 where they’re upgrading it to smart motorways and the speed limit is 50mph, though -.-

Their new place is a bungalow, so it should make it easier for them to get around.

Now they just need to get settled in!

One last thing

If you visit The Writer’s Cookbook and find any issues, please tweet or email me to let me know!

Since I can’t see what the site looks like for everyone else right now, I’ve no idea if everything is 100% working or not!

Thanks in advance 🙂
